Starting a regulated care business takes more than registering a company. You need a viable service model, suitable leadership and clear evidence that the service can operate safely.
1. Choose the service you intend to provide
Define who you will support, where you will operate and whether the planned activities require CQC registration. Domiciliary care and supported living are not automatically the same regulated model, so confirm the regulated activity before building your application.
2. Check leadership suitability
A provider may need a registered manager and, for an organisation, a nominated individual. Consider relevant experience, qualifications, fitness, availability and the ability to demonstrate knowledge during the assessment process.
3. Build the operational foundation
Prepare a service-specific statement of purpose, policies, safeguarding arrangements, recruitment processes, governance systems, insurance and financial planning. Generic documents that do not reflect the proposed service can create gaps.
4. Prepare and review the application
Answer every question accurately and make sure the application, statement of purpose and policies are consistent. Keep evidence organised and be ready to explain how systems will work in practice.
5. Plan for growth after registration
Registration is not a client-acquisition plan. Consider your website, referral relationships, local outreach, pricing, staffing pipeline and contract opportunities early.
